Niacinamide and Vitamin C are two of the most popular ingredients in skincare. Both are often associated with brighter-looking skin, more even tone and overall skin health, but they work in different ways.

That naturally leads to one big question:

Can you use niacinamide and Vitamin C together?

Yes. For most people, niacinamide and Vitamin C can be used together in the same skincare routine. Despite the old skincare myth that these ingredients should never be combined, modern formulations can contain both ingredients and are designed to be used safely and effectively.

The more important question is whether your skin actually needs both, and how you introduce them into your routine.

In a Nutshell

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 used for several skin concerns, including excess oil, uneven-looking skin tone and supporting the skin barrier.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant commonly used to help brighten the appearance of skin and support protection against environmental oxidative stress.
Niacinamide and Vitamin C can generally be used together.
You don't necessarily need both ingredients in your routine.
If you're new to active ingredients, introduce them gradually rather than adding several new products at once.
The formulation, concentration and overall product design matter just as much as the ingredient name on the label.
Sunscreen remains an important part of a daytime routine, especially when you're concerned about pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a form of Vitamin B3.

It's a versatile skincare ingredient because it can support several different aspects of skin health.

Depending on the formulation and concentration, niacinamide is commonly used in products designed for:

Excess oil
Uneven-looking skin tone
The appearance of enlarged pores
Blemish-prone skin
Skin barrier support
Dryness and dehydration
Overall skin texture

One reason niacinamide is so popular is its versatility.

It isn't an ingredient reserved for one specific skin type. It can be incorporated into routines for oily, combination, dry and sensitive skin, depending on the product formulation.

What Is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant used widely in skincare.

It can help support the skin against oxidative stress caused by environmental factors and is commonly used in routines targeting:

Dull-looking skin
Uneven skin tone
The appearance of dark spots
Loss of brightness
Signs of photoageing

But there's an important detail here.

"Vitamin C" isn't just one thing when it comes to skincare formulations.

There are several forms of Vitamin C used in cosmetic products. L-ascorbic acid is one of the most well-known, while other products use different Vitamin C derivatives designed with considerations such as stability, formulation compatibility and skin feel.

So two products that both say "Vitamin C" on the front of the bottle can behave quite differently.

Niacinamide vs Vitamin C: What's the Difference?

The simplest way to understand the difference is to think about what each ingredient brings to a routine.

Niacinamide is a multi-purpose ingredient often used for barrier support, oil control and improving the appearance of uneven skin tone and texture.

Vitamin C is best known for its antioxidant properties and its role in routines focused on brightness and the appearance of pigmentation.

They overlap in some areas, particularly when it comes to overall skin appearance, but they aren't interchangeable.

That's why the choice doesn't have to be:

Niacinamide OR Vitamin C

It can also be:

Niacinamide AND Vitamin C

Can You Use Niacinamide and Vitamin C Together?

Yes.

The idea that niacinamide and Vitamin C should never be used together largely comes from older concerns about how certain forms of these ingredients might interact under specific conditions.

Modern skincare formulations are much more sophisticated.

Products can be formulated with appropriate ingredient combinations, concentrations, pH considerations, stabilizers and delivery systems.

So if you have a well-formulated Vitamin C product and a well-formulated niacinamide product, you don't generally need to avoid using them together simply because they're both active ingredients.

However, "can be used together" doesn't mean "everyone needs to use both."

Your skin's needs should determine your routine.

Can You Use Niacinamide and Vitamin C in the Same Routine?

For many people, yes.

A simple morning routine could look like:

Cleanser → Vitamin C serum → Niacinamide serum → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

But there's an important caveat.

You don't necessarily need two separate serums.

If you're a beginner, adding multiple active products at the same time can make it difficult to figure out what your skin actually likes.

A simpler approach might be:

Morning:

Cleanser → Vitamin C → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

Night:

Cleanser → Niacinamide → Moisturizer

This is not a universal rule. It's simply one practical way to introduce both ingredients without turning your skincare routine into a chemistry exam.

Should Vitamin C Go Before Niacinamide?

If you're using separate serums, a common approach is to apply products from the lighter texture to the heavier texture.

However, texture and formulation can vary significantly between products.

If your Vitamin C serum is lightweight and your niacinamide serum is slightly thicker, Vitamin C would generally go first.

If the products have different instructions from the manufacturer, follow those instructions.

The important thing isn't obsessing over a 30-second difference between two serums.

It's applying your products consistently and avoiding unnecessary irritation.

Can Niacinamide and Vitamin C Help With Dark Spots?

Both ingredients can have a place in a routine focused on uneven-looking skin tone, but they work differently.

Vitamin C is widely used in skincare for its antioxidant properties and for helping improve the appearance of dullness and uneven pigmentation.

Niacinamide is also commonly used in products targeting uneven-looking skin tone and the appearance of dark spots.

But here's the part that often gets skipped in skincare conversations:

Sunscreen matters.

If you're trying to improve the appearance of pigmentation while continuing to expose your skin to UV radiation without adequate protection, your routine is working against a major part of the problem.

A simple routine can therefore look like:

Morning: Vitamin C → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

and:

Night: Niacinamide → Moisturizer

Again, the exact routine depends on your skin and the products you're using.

Which Is Better for Oily Skin?

Niacinamide is often a popular choice for oily and combination skin because it can help support the appearance of balanced-looking skin and is commonly included in formulations targeting excess sebum.

But Vitamin C isn't automatically unsuitable for oily skin.

Your skin type doesn't determine whether you can use an ingredient. The formulation often makes a major difference.

A lightweight serum may feel completely different from a rich cream containing the same headline ingredient.

So instead of asking:

"Is Vitamin C good for oily skin?"

A better question is:

"Which Vitamin C formulation is suitable for my skin and routine?"

Which Is Better for Dry or Sensitive Skin?

Neither ingredient is automatically "the dry skin ingredient" or "the sensitive skin ingredient."

The complete formulation matters.

Niacinamide is often incorporated into barrier-supporting formulations and can be a useful ingredient for people dealing with dryness or a compromised-feeling skin barrier.

Vitamin C products can vary widely in strength and formulation, and some forms may feel more intense than others.

If your skin is sensitive or easily irritated, introduce one new active at a time and pay attention to how your skin responds.

Starting with a simpler routine is usually more sensible than introducing five new ingredients simultaneously.

Can Beginners Use Both?

Absolutely, but there's no need to rush.

If you're completely new to skincare, start with the basics:

Morning:

Cleanser → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

Night:

Cleanser → Moisturizer

Once your basic routine is comfortable and consistent, you can introduce a targeted active based on your concern.

For example, you might start with Vitamin C in the morning if you're primarily concerned about dull-looking skin.

Or you might choose niacinamide if your focus is oiliness, uneven-looking skin or barrier support.

Once your skin is comfortable with one ingredient, you can decide whether adding another makes sense.

What Concentration of Niacinamide Should You Use?

Niacinamide is available at a wide range of concentrations.

More isn't automatically better.

Higher concentrations may not be necessary for everyone, and increasing the percentage doesn't guarantee better results.

A product's overall formulation, supporting ingredients and how well your skin tolerates it matter too.

For beginners, there's usually little reason to jump straight into the strongest product you can find.

Skincare isn't a strength competition.

What Concentration of Vitamin C Should You Use?

Vitamin C products also come in different forms and concentrations.

The ideal concentration depends partly on the form of Vitamin C being used and how the complete formulation is designed.

For example, a product containing L-ascorbic acid can have different formulation considerations from a product using a Vitamin C derivative.

This is why comparing two products solely by percentage can be misleading.

10% of one form of Vitamin C isn't necessarily directly comparable to 10% of another form.

The ingredient form, stability, formulation and delivery system all matter.

Why Formulation Matters More Than the Ingredient List

This is one of the most important things to understand when buying skincare.

Two products can contain the same headline ingredient and still behave very differently.

Why?

Because a skincare product isn't simply a collection of ingredients thrown into a bottle.

Formulators need to consider things such as:

Ingredient compatibility
Concentration
pH
Stability
Solubility
Texture
Preservation
Skin feel
Packaging
How the product behaves over time

This is particularly relevant for ingredients such as Vitamin C, where stability and formulation can be important considerations.

So when you're comparing skincare products, don't look only at the biggest percentage printed on the front.

Look at the entire formulation.

From the Formulation Lab

At Alteryst, we think about ingredients in terms of the formula, not just the ingredient headline.

A product containing 10% of an ingredient isn't automatically better than one containing 5%.

Likewise, two products with the same percentage can perform differently because the surrounding formulation can influence stability, texture, compatibility and how the product behaves on the skin.

That's why formulation is a little more complicated than reading a percentage off a label.

The ingredient matters.

But so does everything around it.

Common Mistakes When Using Vitamin C and Niacinamide

Using too many active ingredients at once

Vitamin C and niacinamide don't need to be joined by five other actives.

If you're introducing multiple new products simultaneously, it becomes difficult to identify what's causing irritation if your skin reacts.

Assuming higher percentages are always better

A stronger formula isn't automatically a better formula for your skin.

Tolerance matters.

Skipping sunscreen

If pigmentation and uneven skin tone are your concerns, sunscreen should not be an afterthought.

Daily sun protection is an important part of a routine focused on maintaining more even-looking skin.

Changing your routine every week

Skincare needs consistency.

Constantly switching products makes it difficult to understand what is actually working for you.

Following ingredient trends without understanding your skin

Just because an ingredient is everywhere on social media doesn't mean you need it.

Your routine should be built around your actual skin concerns.

Vitamin C vs Niacinamide: Which One Should You Choose?

If you're deciding between the two, start with your main skin concern.

Consider Vitamin C if your main concern is:

Dull-looking skin
Uneven-looking skin tone
The appearance of dark spots
Environmental oxidative stress
Loss of brightness

Consider Niacinamide if your main concern is:

Excess oil
Uneven-looking skin
Visible pores
Barrier support
Blemish-prone skin

And if you have multiple concerns?

You may be able to use both.

But you don't have to start with both.

Can You Use Vitamin C in the Morning and Niacinamide at Night?

Yes.

This is one of the simplest ways to incorporate both ingredients into a routine.

Morning

Cleanser → Vitamin C → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

Night

Cleanser → Niacinamide → Moisturizer

This approach can be particularly useful for beginners because it keeps the routine organized without layering several active products at once.

However, there is no universal rule saying Vitamin C must be used in the morning or niacinamide must be used at night.

The best routine depends on the specific products and your skin's needs.

Do You Need Both?

No.

This might be the most useful answer in the entire article.

Skincare isn't about collecting ingredients.

You don't need Vitamin C because TikTok says you do.

You don't need niacinamide because everyone in your group chat suddenly has a 10% serum.

Choose ingredients based on what your skin actually needs.

A simple routine that you use consistently is often more useful than a complicated routine filled with products that you don't understand.
